Riverwalk Lofts: Moving forward in Lawrence, Massachusetts
If you haven’t heard by now, things are happening in Lawrence. That’s right, Lawrence, Massachusetts! Get caught up on the history of this property and our involvement with their landscape design by clicking here.
We stopped in a couple of weeks ago to check on The Lofts Residences entrance landscape progress with Steve Avedisian. The sunken garden with fountain and the pergola with boardwalk all looked great. Our biggest challenge now is getting all the tenants familiar with the K9 Grass, designed and installed for the 80 plus pet dogs living in the Residences!
Design Solutions: Dog and human spaces
The Riverwalk Properties include both residential and business life and The Lofts are part of the multi-unit living areas. Dogs are welcome at The Lofts and so a major part of our design approach must include spaces for all the dogs. Even the planting plans are heavily influenced though the integration of plants that are tolerant of dog use. This will be an ongoing challenge as the plantings get established.
As beautiful and comfortable as the apartment lofts are, people love to get outside and with the Merrimack River right nearby, there is an enticing destination with a diversity of plant and animal life and habitat along the river corridor. However the human need for socialization is very important and we are creating convenient and attractive areas for relaxation and socializing. The paver and wood boardwalk integrates with the wood deck and pergola very near one of the main Loft entries. The adjacent sunken garden area incorporates experiences for all the senses including the sound and feel of water via the stone fountain. The fountain will also be a source of cooling and refreshment for both dogs and humans during the summer months.

Job Site Construction: Maintaining the Vision
Prior to completing the final design phases, we review the site progress and confirm that the drawings are accurately followed. But if not, we make modifications to the landscape plans accordingly. This helps to ensure accuracy in estimates and the materials purchasing process. The construction crews have done a great job considering the technical aspects of the design.

Next Phase: Dog Park and North Entrance
As the West entry project wraps up, we’ll be addressing the need for a dog park and more attractive entrance for the residents at Riverwalk Lofts. db2 Architecture has finished the collaborative plans for the dog park (see below) and we are putting the finishing touches on the North entrance.
